I can’t stress enough how normal we were as a group of young adults living in London, although perhaps looking back on it, that was just our normal. Our friendship developed from there and there was mutual respect from the get-go. We met in a bar in the West End and ended up gallivanting round Soho – the Raymond Revuebar for Gay Bingo followed by too many drinks at the Shadow Lounge, where she was politely asked to leave for being too rowdy. She was casually cool, with a north London accent and heaps of confidence. My first impression of her was that she was unlike anyone I had ever met before. I hope she is at peace now.Normal text size Larger text size Very large text size As one of the greatest singer songwriters of all time. It would be huge now, and it’s the way she should be remembered. I seem to remember it getting lost in the chaos of Christmas releases a few years back. Please, please would her record company re-release her tenderest love song, “Love is a Losing Game” soon. Most important of course, the waste of such a young life and the pain of those who knew and loved her, but it’s also a tragedy for all of us that we won’t be hearing the exquisite music that she would have given us if fate had spared her life.

And her album Back to Black was the best album I had heard since the seventies. In a series of tweets, George Michael wrote: “Amy was, in my opinion, the most soulful vocalist this country has ever seen. I don’t think she ever realized just how brilliant she was and how important she is, but that just makes her even more charming.”Ĭourtney Love, on tour in Moscow, shared her thoughts with Rolling Stone magazine, saying: “I’m not even going to say, ‘Waste of glorious sublime talent’, which I feel,” Love said of the 27-year-old singer. this is one of the saddest days of my life.”Īdele wrote that: “Amy paved the way for artists like me and made people excited about British music again whilst being fearlessly hilarious and blase about the whole thing. Mark Ronson, who produced several songs on Winehouse’s album “Back To Black” and shared a Record of the Year Grammy with her in 2008, tweeted that “she was my musical soulmate & like a sister to me. All they have to do is pick up the phone and make the call. Not all of us know someone with the incredible talent that Amy had but we all know drunks and junkies and they all need help and the help is out there. It is cheaper to rehabilitate an addict than to send them to prison, so criminalisation doesn’t even make economic sense. We need to look at the way our government funds rehabilitation. We need to review the way society treats addicts, not as criminals but as sick people in need of care. “All we can do is adapt the way we view this condition, not as a crime or a romantic affectation but as a disease that will kill. Or Kurt’s or Jimi’s or Janis’s, some people just get the affliction. Not all addicts have Amy’s incredible talent. We have lost a beautiful and talented woman to this disease. Whether this tragedy was preventable or not is now irrelevant. Russell Brand published a post on his website, an excerpt of which said: “Now Amy Winehouse is dead, like many others whose unnecessary deaths have been retrospectively romanticised, at 27 years old. In a tribute on Twitter, Lady Gaga wrote: “Amy changed pop music forever, I remember knowing there was hope, and feeling not alone because of her. Tony Bennett, who was the last person to work with the young singer, told US Weekly: “She was a lovely and intelligent person and when we recorded together she gave a soulful and extraordinary performance… I was honoured to have the opportunity to sing with her.” wrote, “I recorded this song B4 vickileekx and never put it out. released a new song, “27”, dedicated to Winehouse. I love you forever Amy & will never forget the real you!” Kelly Osbourne took time off the social media platform. Russell Brand, M.I.A., and Kelly Osbourne took to Twitter, the recording studio, and their own blogs to remember the singer as well.Īfter tweeting “I can’t even breath right my now I’m crying so hard. The star was mourned by celebrities, fans and those within the music business. What was the reaction to her tragic death? She also had a well-documented drug habit, although was reported to have kicked this.
